While upstreaming those patches, I've been asked to adjust them. This backports those fixes.

Of course, the real reason to do this now is that I need some PR to make a new Git for Windows release (to address the NTLM issue).

/add relnote blurb Following the MSYS2 project, on which Git for Windows is based, Windows 8.1 support will be dropped after Git for Windows v2.55.

The automation, which should have closed this PR via fast-forwarding main failed: "Update is not a fast forward". The reason is that I based this PR not on main by mistake, but on main before #6303 was merged.
