Current imaplib implementation follows obsoleted RFC2060. It should be updated to follow RFC3501.

I'm volunteering myself to work on this as a follow-up work to http://bugs.python.org/issue22137.

imaplib follows RFC 3501 for a long time: all commands are supported and tested, and since gh-40038 argument quoting follows the RFC 3501 grammar. The remaining references to RFC 2060 were updated in GH-153126.

IMAP4rev2 (RFC 9051) is tracked in gh-122953.
